Choosing between sharps or flats in a song is called enharmonic preference. When you view a song in OnSong, it is displayed using a specific musical key. Keys in music have an enharmonic preference. For instance, the major keys G, D, A, E, B and F# are sharp keys. Any time a black key on the piano is played in one of these keys, it's called a "sharp". Major keys F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db and Gb are flat keys. Any time you play a black key on the piano is a "flat". Please note that F# and Gb are both the same key in the sense that you play the same notes.
So what do you when you have a song in the key of Db, but you want to see sharps instead? The easiest was is to use a theoretical key. Theoretical Keys are outside of standard music theory which is why they are called theoretical. However, they can be used to flip the enharmonic preference of some keys.
To do this, go into the
Style Preferences Menu by tapping on the sliders icon in the
Menubar. Tap on the
Chords Tab to view transposition key buttons. By default, OnSong displays standard keys. To enable theoretical keys, tap on the wrench icon to open
Style Preferences Chords Settings. Locate the
Key Section and then the
Theoretical Keys option and enable it and then tap Done. When you open the
Chords Tab of the
Style Preferences Menu again, there will be a third line. The third line displays theoretical keys that align with the keys define in the middle line. You can then tap on the sharp version of the key to view those keys with your preferred enharmonic preference.
